Janissary Insignia and Tombstones of the Ottoman Janissary.

(Kitâbe-i Seng-i Mezar-ı Yeniçeriyân)

2025 — 916 pages

Summary

Janissary symbols, tombstones, seals, ensigns, standards, manuscript marks, and material culture sources are identified, documented, and catalogued, while the symbolism of Janissary emblem is examined through a comparative and source-based approach. Janissary Insignia and Tombstones of the Ottoman Janissary Corps is the most comprehensive study to date on Ottoman Janissary tombstones and Janissary emblems, bringing together approximately 1,500 tombstones from Turkey and the Balkans through extensive field research conducted across cemeteries, mosque graveyards, and neglected burial sites. Unlike earlier limited studies focusing on small regional collections, this work presents a large-scale inventory of both insignia-bearing and non-insignia-bearing Janissary tombstones, alongside previously unidentified Janissary seals, standards, ensigns, manuscript marks, and visual materials, many of which are rapidly disappearing due to destruction, neglect, and urban transformation.

Janissary and Ottoman Military Symbols

The book examines not only Janissary tombstones themselves but also the political, military, and symbolic structure of the Janissary Corps through funerary material culture. The tombstones are systematically identified and classified according to Janissary aghas, boluks, cemâ’ats, sekbans, and tulumbacıs, while ranks, duties, military affiliations, and previously unidentified Janissary symbols are documented beneath each inscription. Ottoman military headgear, turbans, kavuks, and ceremonial forms are likewise catalogued, analyzed, and classified in detail.

Janissary insignia and tombstones

One of the study’s most significant contributions is the documentation of previously unpublished Janissary military emblems, symbols (remizler), seals, ensigns, and standards found on tombstones, manuscripts, and related visual materials. Through epigraphic evidence, Ottoman manuscripts, visual analysis, and comparative material culture, the book identifies the insignia associated with specific Janissary boluks and cemâ’ats while also correcting numerous long-repeated inaccuracies in earlier scholarship.

Previously Unidentified Janissary Ensigns and Seals

By combining Ottoman epigraphy, funerary culture, Ottoman janissary military emblems, visual identity, and material culture, the study offers a new perspective on the Janissary Corps and Ottoman military culture. Beyond being a tombstone catalogue, the work constitutes a major documentary archive and visual inventory preserving a rapidly vanishing part of Ottoman cultural heritage.
